This is the second article in our skills series designed to help Zimbabweans survive, adapt, and eventually thrive in an economy where jobs are scarce and informality is the reality. In Part 1, we covered Graphic Design. Today, we move into a practical, hands-on skill that is in high demand across Zimbabwe: CCTV Installation.<\/p>\n
CCTV installation is not for everyone, and that is perfectly fine. This series will cover many different skills over time, both digital and practical, and you will definitely find something that suits your strengths. The goal is not to force you into one path, but to expose you to real, usable skills that can change your direction in life if you take them seriously.<\/p>\n
What matters most is this: the first step is acquiring a skill. Everything else comes after.<\/p>\n
Security is no longer a luxury in Zimbabwe; it is a necessity. Every home, business, church, school, shop, factory, warehouse, and office needs protection. Crime rates, theft, and break-ins have made CCTV systems an essential investment for both individuals and organisations.<\/p>\n
The demand for CCTV installers is growing every day. New buildings are being constructed, existing properties are being upgraded, and businesses are expanding their surveillance coverage. Yet the number of skilled installers remains limited. This gap between demand and supply creates a significant opportunity for anyone willing to learn.<\/p>\n
One of the biggest drivers of CCTV demand in Zimbabwe is employee theft. Business owners, shop operators, warehouse managers, and factory owners lose significant amounts of money every year due to internal theft. Staff members stealing stock, cash, or supplies is a painful reality that many businesses face. CCTV systems provide business owners with the evidence they need to identify dishonest employees and protect their operations.<\/p>\n
Beyond employee theft, businesses also need CCTV to monitor customer behaviour, prevent shoplifting, protect premises after hours, and maintain records for insurance purposes. Supermarkets, hardware stores, pharmacies, clothing shops, fuel stations, restaurants, and wholesalers are all potential clients who need comprehensive surveillance coverage.<\/p>\n
Most business owners today want their CCTV systems connected to the internet so they can do remote viewing. They want to monitor their shops, warehouses, and offices from their smartphones or laptops, even when they are at home or travelling. This means that as a CCTV installer, you need to understand not just camera installation, but also network configuration, router setup, port forwarding, and mobile app configuration. The ability to set up reliable remote viewing is a skill that separates average installers from professionals who can charge premium rates.<\/p>\n
Unlike some digital skills, CCTV installation puts you directly in front of clients. You visit their premises, assess their needs, install the system, and provide ongoing support. This face-to-face interaction builds trust and generates repeat business and referrals.<\/p>\n
Many people think CCTV installation is simply mounting cameras on walls. The reality is far more comprehensive. A skilled CCTV installer handles:<\/p>\n
Site surveys and security assessments, system design and camera placement planning, cable routing and installation, camera mounting and positioning, DVR and NVR setup and configuration, network configuration for IP cameras, mobile app setup for remote viewing, power supply installation and backup systems, testing and quality assurance, client training on system usage, maintenance and troubleshooting, and system upgrades and expansions.<\/p>\n
A CCTV installer needs to be familiar with various equipment:<\/p>\n
Cameras (dome, bullet, PTZ, turret, fisheye), DVRs and NVRs (4-channel, 8-channel, 16-channel, 32-channel), hard drives for storage, power supplies and POE switches, cables (coaxial, Cat5e, Cat6, fibre optic), connectors (BNC, RJ45, DC power), monitors and display screens, surge protectors and UPS systems, mounting brackets and junction boxes, and tools (crimpers, testers, drills, ladders).<\/p>\n
Hikvision and Dahua dominate the Zimbabwean market due to their balance of quality and affordability. Learning to configure these systems will cover most of your client needs.<\/p>\n
You can learn CCTV installation both online and offline, and both free and paid options exist.<\/p>\n
Free options are excellent for understanding theory and basic concepts. Paid options, especially those with practical components, are highly recommended because CCTV installation is a hands-on skill that requires physical practice.<\/p>\n
Learning is not about how much you pay. It is about how much effort you put in and how much practical experience you gain.<\/p>\n

This is very important. The primary goal of learning CCTV installation in Zimbabwe is not employment. Jobs are scarce. If you happen to get a good-paying job with a security company, that is a bonus, especially when you are just starting and need experience. However, that is not the end goal.<\/p>\n
The main goal is to start your own installation and maintenance business.<\/p>\n
CCTV installation allows you to sell skill, not time. You can serve multiple clients without an employer. You set your own prices. You build your own reputation. That is power.<\/p>\n
You can start from home. Market your services on WhatsApp, Facebook, and door-to-door. Be aggressive, but professional. Do not be shy. This is business.<\/p>\n
To start, you need a portfolio. Clients want to see proof of your work, not just certificates. You can build a portfolio by:<\/p>\n
* Installing systems for family and friends at a discount
\n* Offering free or low-cost installations for churches or community organisations
\n* Documenting every installation with photos and videos
\n* Taking before-and-after pictures of your work
\n* Collecting testimonials from satisfied clients<\/p>\n
Once people see that you can install quality systems, they will trust you with bigger projects.<\/p>\n
You do not need to buy everything at once. Start with the basics and expand as your business grows:<\/p>\n
Essential tools to start:
\nCrimping tool for BNC and RJ45 connectors, cable tester, power drill with masonry bits, screwdrivers (various sizes), pliers and wire cutters, ladder, measuring tape, cable ties, electrical tape, and a smartphone for testing and configuration.<\/p>\n
Equipment you can buy as needed:
\nNetwork cable tester, CCTV tester monitor, cable pulling tools, and specialised mounting equipment.<\/p>\n
Initial investment estimate: US$50 to US$150 for basic tools.<\/p>\n
Marketing Your CCTV Installation Services<\/p>\n
Marketing is not optional. It is as important as the skill itself. Many skilled installers fail simply because nobody knows they exist.<\/p>\n
Start by marketing on WhatsApp and Facebook. Post your work consistently. Show installation photos (with client permission). Share tips about security and CCTV systems. Let people see what you are capable of. Do not wait for clients to come to you.<\/p>\n
Be proactive. Walk into businesses, shops, warehouses, churches, schools, and offices. Identify premises without CCTV or with outdated systems and politely offer your services. Many business owners know they need security cameras but have not found a reliable installer.<\/p>\n
Word of mouth is powerful. Deliver quality work on time. Be professional. Respond quickly to calls. Clients who trust you will recommend you to others.<\/p>\n
Create simple flyers or business cards with your contact details and distribute them in your area.<\/p>\n
Pricing depends on the complexity of the installation, the number of cameras, the type of system, and your location. There are two ways to price your services: labour only, or fix and supply (equipment plus installation).<\/p>\n
If the client purchases their own equipment and you only provide installation services, here are general guidelines:<\/p>\n
* Basic residential installation (4 cameras): US$50 to US$100 labour
\n* Medium installation (8 cameras): US$100 to US$200 labour
\n* Commercial installation (16+ cameras): US$200 to US$500+ labour<\/p>\n
Most clients prefer fix and supply packages where you provide everything: equipment, cables, installation, and configuration. Based on current market prices in Zimbabwe, here are typical fix and supply package prices:<\/p>\n
2 Camera Package: US$250 to US$300
\nIncludes: 4 Channel DVR, 2x cameras, 500GB hard drive, power supply, cabling, and 19″ screen<\/p>\n
4 Camera Package: US$400 to US$450
\nIncludes: 4 Channel DVR, 4x 2MP cameras, 1TB hard drive, power supply, cabling, trunking, and screen<\/p>\n
8 Camera Package: US$600 to US$750
\nIncludes: 8 Channel DVR, 8x 2MP cameras, 1-2TB hard drive, power supply, cabling, trunking, junction boxes, and 32″ screen<\/p>\n
16 Camera Package: US$1,200 to US$1,300
\nIncludes: 16 Channel DVR, 16x 2MP cameras, 1-2TB hard drive, power supply, cabling, trunking, junction boxes, and 32″ screen<\/p>\n
24+ Camera Package: US$2,500 and above
\nIncludes: Multiple DVRs, 24-32x cameras, 4TB+ hard drive, power supplies, extensive cabling, trunking, junction boxes, and monitoring screen<\/p>\n
These prices vary depending on camera quality (2MP, 5MP, 4K), brand (Hikvision, Dahua, generic), hard drive size, cable lengths required, and installation complexity. Always do a site survey before quoting to assess the actual requirements.<\/p>\n
In Zimbabwe, most CCTV installers operate on a fix and supply model. This means you do not need to keep large amounts of stock. When a client requests a quotation, you assess their needs, source the equipment from a supplier at trade price, add your markup, and present a total price to the client. Once they approve and pay, you purchase the equipment and complete the installation.<\/p>\n
This approach has several advantages. You do not tie up capital in inventory that may sit unsold. You can offer clients a wide range of options without owning every product. You only buy what you have already sold. As your business grows and you build relationships with suppliers, you may negotiate better prices or credit terms, which increases your profit margins.<\/p>\n
When you are just starting out, it is wise to require a deposit from clients before purchasing equipment. A deposit of 50% to 70% of the total cost protects you from clients who change their minds or delay payment. This ensures you are not stuck with equipment you cannot use or sell. Once you receive the deposit, you purchase the equipment, complete the installation, and collect the balance upon completion.<\/p>\n
However, as you become established and build capital, you can offer pay on delivery terms. This means you use your own money to purchase the equipment, complete the installation, and the client pays the full amount once the job is done. This approach attracts many more customers because it removes the barrier of upfront payment. Clients feel more comfortable knowing they only pay when they see the finished work. The downside is that it requires working capital and carries some risk if a client refuses to pay. But for an established installer with a good reputation and cash reserves, pay on delivery can significantly increase your customer base and set you apart from competitors who demand deposits.<\/p>\n
The key is to know your suppliers well. Visit security equipment shops in Harare, get their price lists, and understand their stock availability. Build relationships so you can get equipment quickly when you have a job. Some suppliers even offer technical support that can help you with challenging installations.<\/p>\n
As you gain experience and reputation, you can increase your prices. Specialised work like IP camera configuration, network integration, and access control systems commands higher rates.<\/p>\n
CCTV installation naturally leads to related services:<\/p>\n
* Access control systems (biometric readers, card access, electric locks)
\n* Intruder alarm systems (motion detectors, door sensors, sirens)
\n* Electric fence installation
\n* Intercom and video door phone systems
\n* Fire alarm systems
\n* Solar power for security systems
\n* Maintenance contracts (monthly or annual service agreements)<\/p>\n
Each additional service increases your earning potential and makes you more valuable to clients who want a one-stop solution for their security needs.<\/p>\n
As your client base grows and income becomes consistent, you will naturally reach a point where you cannot do everything alone. This is where growth begins.<\/p>\n
You may start by subcontracting larger jobs to fellow installers. You may hire an assistant to help with cabling and basic mounting. You may invest in better tools and a vehicle for transport.<\/p>\n
With time, you may need to hire trained technicians, administrative staff, and salespeople. You reinvest profits into inventory (cameras, DVRs, cables), better equipment, paid advertising, and eventually office space. What started as a one-person operation can grow into a full security solutions company employing several people.<\/p>\n
CCTV installation is a recurring revenue business. Systems need maintenance, upgrades, and repairs. Hard drives fail. Cameras get damaged. Software needs updating. Clients who trust you will call you back for support and refer others to you.<\/p>\n
CCTV installation will not make you rich overnight. It requires learning, practice, patience, and business sense. But with a skill in your hands, you are no longer helpless.<\/p>\n
Security is a growing industry. Every new building, every growing business, every concerned homeowner is a potential client. The demand is there. The question is whether you will position yourself to meet it.<\/p>\n
