Dear Breadwinner,<\/p>\n
In many Zimbabwean families, there is one person who carries everyone. The one who made it. The one everybody turns to. The one who pays the school fees, covers the emergencies, funds the funerals, and keeps the whole extended family standing. It is a noble and loving role, but it hides a quiet danger.<\/p>\n
This is the story of a good man who carried his entire family on his back for years, and woke up one day to discover that in caring for everyone, he had forgotten to care for himself. If you are the one who carries your family, read this carefully.<\/p>\n
Ngoni was the pride of his family.<\/p>\n
He had worked hard, earned a good education, and landed a solid, well-paying job. He was the first in his family to truly succeed in this way, and everyone celebrated him. He was a kind and dutiful man, and he loved his family deeply. From the moment he began to earn, he made a quiet promise to himself: now that he had made it, no one in his family would suffer if he could help it.<\/p>\n
It was a beautiful promise, born of love. But Ngoni did not yet understand the weight he had just agreed to carry, or how that weight, unmanaged, would slowly crush his own future.<\/p>\n
At first, it was natural and right. He helped his aging parents, who had sacrificed so much to raise him. That was honourable, and he was glad to do it.<\/p>\n
But it did not stop there. He began paying school fees for his younger siblings. Then for cousins. Then for the children of relatives he barely knew. When any relative faced an emergency, they called Ngoni. When a funeral came, Ngoni was expected to carry the largest share. When a family member wanted to start something, or needed a phone, or fell into difficulty, the answer was always the same: ask Ngoni. He will sort it out.<\/p>\n
He became the family bank. The family insurance. The family safety net. Every problem in the wider family eventually made its way to his door, and he, out of love and duty, never turned it away.<\/p>\n
The demands did not shrink as the years passed. They grew.<\/p>\n
The more Ngoni gave, the more was expected of him. His generosity, rather than solving the family’s needs, seemed to multiply them. Relatives came to rely on him entirely, and some stopped trying to stand on their own, knowing that Ngoni would always catch them. His willingness to give had, without anyone intending it, created a family that leaned on him completely.<\/p>\n
And Ngoni could not say no. Every time he considered it, guilt rose up. These were his people. He was blessed and they were struggling. How could he refuse? What kind of man would he be to have money in his pocket while his family suffered? So he kept giving, and giving, and giving, treating himself as a bottomless well.<\/p>\n
But no well is bottomless. And no one had noticed how low his own water had become.<\/p>\n
Here was the quiet tragedy that no one saw, not even Ngoni.<\/p>\n
In all those years of carrying everyone, Ngoni had saved nothing for himself. He had no meaningful savings, because every spare cent went to the family. But beneath the surface, he was as unprepared for his own future as the relatives who depended on him. He had become rich in giving and poor in security.<\/p>\n
One evening, Ngoni confided in his friend Tendai that he felt exhausted and stretched thin, though he could not quite say why. Tendai, a thoughtful man who had built quiet security for his own family, listened, and then asked a simple question.<\/p>\n
“Ngoni, you have carried your family for years, and it is admirable. But let me ask you something. After all these years of earning a good salary, how much have you saved for yourself? What have you invested? What do you own? What have you set aside for your own old age?”<\/p>\n
Ngoni opened his mouth to answer, and found that he had none. He sat in silence, the truth dawning on him coldly. After all these years, all that giving, all that hard work, he had nothing of his own. Not savings. Not investments. Not a foundation for his own future.<\/p>\n
“Nothing,” he finally admitted. “I have saved nothing for myself.”<\/p>\n
“Then we must talk,” Tendai said gently, “before the day comes when you need help, and there is no Ngoni to call.”<\/p>\n
“Ngoni,” Tendai said, “I want you to understand something, and I want you to hear it with love, not judgement. You cannot pour from an empty cup. You have been giving and giving, but you have not been filling yourself. And a day will come, through age, illness, or misfortune, when you can no longer earn as you do now. On that day, if you have built nothing for yourself, you will not only be unable to help your family. You will become a burden yourself, or you will suffer alone, after a lifetime of carrying others.”<\/p>\n
“But how can I refuse my family?” Ngoni asked. “They need me.”<\/p>\n
“I am not telling you to abandon them. I am telling you that securing yourself is not selfishness. It is wisdom, and it is the only way you can keep helping them for the long term. Think of the airplane, where they tell you to fit your own oxygen mask first before helping others. It is not because you matter more. It is because if you collapse, you can help no one. You must secure yourself first, so that you can continue to be a blessing to your family for many years, instead of collapsing and helping no one.”<\/p>\n
“So what must I do?” Ngoni asked.<\/p>\n
“You must pay yourself first,” Tendai said. “Before you give a single cent to anyone else, set aside something for your own savings, your own investments, your own future. Treat your future self as a person who also deserves your care. Then give to your family from what remains, from your overflow, not from your foundation.”<\/p>\n
“It feels wrong to save for myself while others go without.”<\/p>\n
“It only feels wrong because you have never done it. But think clearly. If you keep giving everything and saving nothing, you will eventually have nothing, and then you help no one and become a burden. But if you secure yourself first and give from the surplus, you can help your family steadily for the rest of your life, and never collapse. Which is the greater love? A gift today that leaves you ruined tomorrow, or a lifetime of steady support built on a foundation that does not crumble?”<\/p>\n
“There is something else,” Tendai continued. “Look closely at how you help. Much of your giving has created dependence. You have caught your relatives so many times that some have stopped trying to stand. Your help, given without wisdom, has weakened the very people you love.”<\/p>\n
“What should I do instead?”<\/p>\n
“Give help that builds, not help that drains. Where you can, help people gain skills, education, and the means to support themselves, rather than funding endless consumption. Teach and empower rather than simply hand out. A relative who learns to earn is helped forever. A relative who is only ever given is kept dependent forever. The goal is to lift your family toward standing on their own, not to carry them on your back until it breaks.”<\/p>\n
“But the guilt,” Ngoni said. “When I say no, I feel I have betrayed my family.”<\/p>\n
“You must learn that boundaries are not betrayal,” Tendai said firmly. “You are one person, not an endless supply. It is not betrayal to have limits. It is not betrayal to say that this month you cannot, or that you can give this much and no more. A well that is allowed to refill can serve a family for a lifetime. A well that is pumped without rest until it runs dry serves no one. Setting limits is what allows you to keep giving at all. The relative who would resent you for protecting your own future was leaning on you too heavily to begin with.”<\/p>\n
Ngoni took the words to heart, and slowly, carefully, he changed.<\/p>\n
He began to pay himself first. Before the family demands, he set aside money for his own savings and investments, quietly building the foundation he had neglected for so long. He continued to help his family, because he loved them, but now he gave from his overflow, within limits he set with a clear conscience. He began to help in ways that built people up, funding education and skills rather than endless handouts. He learned, gently and without cruelty, to say no when he needed to.<\/p>\n
At first, some relatives grumbled. They had grown used to the bottomless well. But Ngoni held firm, and in time, something good happened. Some of those who had leaned on him began to stand on their own. And Ngoni, for the first time in his life, watched his own savings and investments grow. He was building a future that belonged to him, while still being a blessing to those he loved.<\/p>\n
Years later, when age and change eventually reduced his earning, Ngoni was not left destitute. He had a foundation. He was secure. And because he was secure, he was still able to help his family in his own quiet way, long after a man who had given everything would have had nothing left to give.<\/p>\n
“I almost gave away my entire future,” he told Tendai one day. “And I would have called it love.”<\/p>\n
“Real love,” Tendai replied, “secures itself so that it can keep on giving. You learned it in time.”<\/p>\n

Carrying your family is a noble thing, and love calls us to help those who depend on us. But love that destroys itself helps no one in the end. Secure your own foundation first, give wisely from your overflow, and you will be able to bless your family not just today, but for the whole of your life. Care for others, yes, but do not forget to carry yourself.<\/p>\n
