This is one of the most in-demand skills in Zimbabwe right now. Every day, someone loses their car keys. Every day, someone gets locked out of their house. Every day, someone needs a spare key cut. And most people have no idea how to solve these problems themselves — they need a locksmith.
The best part? You do not need any formal educational qualifications to start. You need practical skills, the right tools, and the willingness to learn.
What Does a Locksmith Do?
A locksmith works with locks and keys. In Zimbabwe, the work falls into three main categories:
Residential and Commercial Work:
– Opening locked doors (houses, offices, shops)
– Cutting keys for door locks
– Repairing and replacing door locks
– Opening safes and vaults
– Resetting safe combinations
– Installing alarm systems
– Supplying and fitting new locks
Automotive Work:
– Car key cutting and programming
– Smart key and transponder key programming

Mobile Services:
Most locksmiths in Zimbabwe operate as mobile businesses. They travel to the customer — whether at home, at the office, or on the roadside. Many offer 24/7 emergency services because lockouts do not follow business hours.
Why This Skill is Valuable in Zimbabwe
The demand for locksmith services in Zimbabwe is constant and comes from multiple sources.
Residential and Commercial:
People get locked out of their homes. People need spare keys. Tenants move out and landlords need locks changed. Businesses need new locks fitted. Safes jam or combinations are forgotten. Security upgrades require new lock installations. Every office, shop, warehouse, and home has locks — and locks eventually need servicing.
Automotive Work:
Look at the cars on our roads. Honda Fit, Toyota Aqua, Nissan Note, Mazda Demio — these Japanese imports dominate. Most of them have transponder keys or smart keys that require programming, not just cutting.
When someone loses their car key, they need a locksmith. There is no other practical option. And with most vehicles being imports, the locksmith who can program a Honda Fit key or replace a Nissan Note smart key is solving a problem that would otherwise leave someone stranded.
The demand never stops:

How to Learn This Skill
There are several paths to learning locksmith work:
1. Apprenticeship with an Existing Locksmith
This is the most practical way to learn in Zimbabwe. Find a working locksmith and offer to work with them.
Some locksmiths will teach you for free if you work as their assistant — carrying tools, holding equipment, watching and learning on real jobs. You learn while you help them.
Other locksmiths may want to be paid for training you. If you have the finances, this is a worthwhile investment. You will learn on real jobs with real customers, which is better than any classroom.
Start by contacting locksmiths in your area. Explain that you want to learn the trade. Some will say no. Keep asking until someone says yes.
2. Formal Training in Zimbabwe

Starting costs vary depending on what services you want to offer:

The Lishi Tool is particularly important for automotive work. It allows you to pick a car lock and decode the key cuts at the same time. One tool does two jobs. Different Lishi tools work on different car models, so you build your collection based on the vehicles common in your area (Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda for Zimbabwe).
You do not need everything at once. Start with basic tools and add equipment as you earn money and expand your services.
How Much Can You Earn?
Locksmith services in Zimbabwe command good prices because they solve urgent problems:
Residential Services:
– House unlocking: $10-$30
– Key cutting (standard door key): $3-$10
– Lock replacement and fitting: $20-$50
– Safe opening: $50-$150+
Automotive Services (where the real money is):
– Car unlocking (locked keys inside): $15-$40
– Spare car key cutting and programming: $30-$80
– Lost car key replacement (all keys lost): $80-$200+
– Smart key programming: $50-$150
– Ignition repair: $40-$100
– Key casing renewal: $15-$30
A busy automotive locksmith can earn $100-$300 daily. Even part-time work on weekends can bring in $200-$500 per month.
The 24/7 nature of emergency work means you can charge premium rates for after-hours callouts. A 2 AM car lockout commands higher prices than a midday spare key.
How to Get Started
Step 1: Learn the Basics
Start with free online resources. Watch YouTube tutorials. Read the MIT Lock Picking Guide. Understand how locks work before you touch your first real lock.
Step 2: Get Hands-On Training
Either apprentice with a working locksmith or enrol in a formal course like IXAR Academy. Theory is not enough — you need to practice on real locks.
Step 3: Start with Simple Services
Begin with basic services: house unlocking, key cutting, car lockouts. These require less equipment and build your confidence.
Step 4: Invest in Automotive Tools
As you earn money, invest in Lishi tools and a key programmer. Automotive work pays better and has consistent demand.
Step 5: Go Mobile
Most customers need you to come to them. A motorbike or small car, a phone, and your tools are all you need to operate.
Step 6: Build Your Reputation
Word of mouth is everything. Solve problems quickly. Be honest about pricing. Answer your phone at odd hours. Happy customers refer more customers.
Important Considerations
Legality and Ethics:
Locksmith skills can be misused. Only provide services to vehicle owners or people who can prove they are authorised to access the property or vehicle.
Continuous Learning:
Car security technology changes constantly. New immobilizer systems, new key types, new programming methods. You must keep learning to stay relevant. Follow locksmith forums, watch new tutorials, and invest in updated equipment.
Emergency Availability:
The locksmiths who make the most money are available when others are not. Nights, weekends, holidays — these are when people get locked out and are willing to pay premium rates.
Your Path Forward
Locksmith work is a genuine skill that solves real problems for real money. The barrier to entry is lower than many trades — no formal qualifications required, relatively affordable startup costs, and training available both online and in Zimbabwe.
The demand is constant. As long as people use locks and keys, they will need locksmiths. And with Zimbabwe’s growing vehicle population and the complexity of modern car keys, automotive locksmith work is only becoming more valuable.
