The demand for photography and videography in Zimbabwe is large and growing for several reasons.

Every life event needs it. Weddings, roora, graduations, birthdays, and funerals are deeply important in our culture, and people want them professionally captured. These events happen every single weekend, all year round.

Social media has created endless demand. Every business now needs photos and videos for Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok. Influencers and content creators need constant content. This is a huge and relatively new market that did not exist at this scale a few years ago.

Businesses need professional visuals. As more businesses realise that good images and video help them sell, the demand for product photography, brand videos, and promotional content keeps rising.

The diaspora market pays well. Many Zimbabweans abroad pay for photography and videography services back home — capturing family milestones, funerals, and events they cannot attend in person, and paying from abroad. This is a lucrative and growing market for those who position themselves to serve it.

4. Apprenticeship — Learn on the Job With an Established Photographer

One of the most effective ways to learn this trade is to work alongside someone already doing it, learning on the job as their assistant. This is how many of Zimbabwe’s working photographers and videographers learned their craft.

Approach an established photographer or studio and offer to work with them. As an assistant, you are not just there to carry equipment — you are there to learn the entire trade by being part of real, paying jobs. You watch how they communicate with clients and close bookings. You learn how they set up shots, handle difficult lighting, and pose people. You see how a wedding or event is covered from start to finish. You learn how the footage and photos are edited and delivered. You absorb the business side as much as the technical side.

If you need to, offer to work for free at first. The experience and knowledge you gain on real jobs is worth far more than any wage you would earn in those early weeks. What matters is getting into the room where the work is happening and learning by doing. Over time, as your skill grows, you take on more responsibility — perhaps second-shooting at weddings, handling your own small jobs, and eventually working entirely on your own. The relationships you build during this period often become your first referrals when you start out independently.

How to Find Customers and Market Your Business

This is a visual business, so your marketing must be visual too.

1. Build a Strong Portfolio

Your work is your advertisement. Photograph and film constantly — friends, family, events, anything — and build a collection of your best work to show potential clients. A strong portfolio is what convinces people to hire you.
