Wisdom of the Elders Part 1: Timeless Counsel on Investing for the Days When You Can No Longer Work

Why You Should Invest for Retirement

Dear Friend,

Sit with me a while, for I wish to share with you a truth as old as time itself, a truth that the wealthy have always known and the struggling have too often ignored. It is a simple truth, yet upon it rests the comfort or the sorrow of your later years. Listen well, for the years do not wait, and the wisdom I offer you is of no use unless it is received while there is still time to act upon it.

Each Day the Sun Rises, and Each Day We Grow Older

Consider the rising and the setting of the sun. Each morning it climbs into the sky, and each evening it descends. And with every rising and every setting, you, my friend, grow one day older. This is the way of all living things. It cannot be stopped, it cannot be bargained with, and it cannot be reversed.

Today you are strong. Today your hands can labour, your back can bear weight, and your mind is sharp for the work of earning. But mark this well: the strength you enjoy today is not a possession you will hold forever. It is a season, and like all seasons, it will pass. The young man of today is the old man of tomorrow. The days of strength are numbered, though we know not their number.

He who understands this grows wise. He who ignores it grows old in regret.

The Day Will Come When You Can No Longer Work

There is a day appointed for every worker, though its date is hidden. It is the day when the body will no longer do what it once did with ease. The day when age, or weariness, or the changing of the world, will bring your earning years to their close.

That day will come as surely as the sun will set this evening. The only question, my friend, is this: when it comes, will it find you prepared, or will it find you with empty hands? For the bills of that day will not cease simply because your earning has ceased. You will still need to eat. You will still need shelter. You will still need to live. And if you have made no provision, that season, which should be one of rest and dignity, will instead be one of want and dependence.

The wise man asks himself this question while he is still strong: how shall I provide for the days when I can no longer provide by my labour? And having asked it, he acts.

Store Grain in the Season of Harvest

Learn from the wisdom of the farmer. The farmer does not eat all of his harvest in the season of plenty. Were he to do so, he would starve in the season of want. Instead, he stores a portion of his grain, setting it aside against the lean months he knows will surely come. And because he stored in the time of plenty, he does not perish in the time of scarcity.

So it must be with you and the fruits of your labour. Your earning years are your season of harvest. The years when you can no longer work are your season of want. And the grain you must store is a portion of all that you earn.

Let this be the law by which you live: a portion of all you earn is yours to keep. When your wages come into your hands, before you spend on this and on that, set aside a portion and store it away. Do not consume all that you earn, or you will be as the foolish farmer who ate his seed and had nothing to plant. Store in your season of harvest, and you shall not want in your season of rest.

Let Your Stored Wealth Labour for You

Now hear a deeper wisdom, for it is not enough merely to store. The grain that is only stored may be eaten by rats or rot with the passing of time. But the grain that is planted multiplies, returning many times what was sown.

So it is with the wealth you set aside. Do not let it merely sit idle. Let it labour for you. Put it to work, so that it grows and multiplies even while you sleep. Invest it wisely in things that increase and bear fruit: in land, in property, in honest ventures, in shares of worthy enterprises, in whatever grows and returns to you more than you put in.

For here is the wonder of it: a man who works, earns only while he works. But wealth that is invested works without ceasing, in the day and in the night, in summer and in winter, whether its owner is young or old, awake or asleep, strong or weary. The man who has taught his wealth to labour for him has found a servant that never tires. And when at last his own strength fails, that tireless servant continues to provide for him.

Invest for Those Who Will Come After You

There is yet another reason to store and to invest, and it is a reason of love. For you do not labour only for yourself. You labour for your children, and for their children after them.

Consider what you will leave behind when your days are done. Will you leave your children a foundation to build upon, or will you leave them nothing, or worse, leave them your debts to carry? The wise build not only for their own later years, but for the generations that follow. They plant trees under whose shade they themselves may never sit, knowing that their children will one day rest beneath the branches.

Invest, therefore, for those who will come after you. Let the wealth you build become the foundation of your family for generations. Let your children begin their lives further along the road than you began yours, because you were wise enough to build for them. This is how a family rises, not in one generation, but across many, each one standing upon the shoulders of the one before. Be the one who begins the rising.

Do Not Delay, for the Years Do Not Wait

Perhaps you say to yourself, “I shall begin to store and to invest when I earn more, when times are easier, when the burdens of today have passed.” But hear me, my friend, for this is the very thought that has led countless souls to a poor and dependent old age.

The burdens of today will be replaced by the burdens of tomorrow. The easier time you await may never come. And all the while, the sun rises and sets, and you grow older, and the season of your strength quietly slips away. He who waits to begin until the perfect moment will find that the perfect moment never arrives, and that his years have been spent.

The best time to have begun was in your youth. But the second best time is now, this very day, whatever your age and whatever your earnings. Begin with what you have. Begin small if you must, but begin. Store a portion of all you earn, however little. Put it to work. And do this faithfully, month after month, year after year, and time itself will become your ally, multiplying your small and steady effort into something great.

The Choice Before You

So here, my friend, is the choice that lies before you, as it lies before every person who earns.

You may consume all that you earn, living only for today, and arrive at the season of weakness with empty hands, dependent and full of regret. Or you may store a portion of all you earn, invest it wisely so that it labours for you, and arrive at the season of rest with dignity, security, and something to leave to those you love.

The sun will rise tomorrow, and you will be one day older. This cannot be changed. But whether that passing day finds you building toward a secure future or drifting toward a fearful one, that, my friend, is entirely in your hands.

Store while you are strong. Invest while you have time. Build for your later years, and build for your children. For you cannot work forever, but if you are wise, you will not need to. Begin today, while the sun is still high.

With respect for the years ahead of you,
